Breast augmentation with implant / prosthesis / silicone
Oslo Plastic Surgery has more than 20 years' experience of breast augmentation with implants, and we have operated on more than a thousand patients. We have authored professional articles based on our experience and have been published in internationally recognized journals such as Kirurgen and Anesthetic Surgery Journal (see appendix below), as well as lecturing and training in many Norwegian and international forums and congresses in plastic surgery worldwide.
We see that breast augmentation with implants increases the self-confidence and quality of life of our patients (see attached article below).
The result is based on an anonymous lifestyle survey among our breast surgery patients to reveal which aspects they are satisfied with, and the patient's motivation for breast surgery.
Some women have disturbances during breast development and have therefore not fully developed and normal breasts, and some have developed asymmetrically shaped breasts. Others have experienced fat loss and/or sagging breasts after pregnancy and/or weight loss. This can be both cosmetically and intimately disfiguring. These groups are candidates for breast augmentation with breast implants.
Breastfeeding ability is not normally impaired by the surgery, nor is the possibility of mammography. Nor does breast augmentation increase the incidence of breast cancer.
The reports of possible adverse effects of silicone inserts have not been scientifically proven.
During the consultation, we examine the shape, size and position of the breasts to determine what is missing in terms of shape and volume. We then photograph the breasts and measure important distance measurements to assess the need for an implant.
You can then test with special bra prostheses in different sizes and shapes. We show several before and after pictures so that you can get an idea of the result. If desired, we can show a 3D animation of the result.
Please let us know about this before the consultation so that we can allow plenty of time. In some cases, the patient's own fat can also be inserted in addition to the implant to further improve the contour of the breast and increase the volume, which gives a more natural result, a so-called hybrid procedure. See separate information in the breast treatment list.
About our prosthetics
Oslo Plastic Surgery uses the world's leading manufacturer of Mentor prostheses, which offers both round and teardrop-shaped (anatomically shaped) implants in various sizes.
In consultation with your surgeon, you will choose which implant is right for you. The implants are filled with a unique, patented silicone gel; MemoryGel.
MemoryGel is a cohesive gelatin-like substance that acts as a solid, not a liquid. MemoryGel feels like natural breast tissue and provides the best possible aesthetic result.
This is available in several profiles, from moderate to ultra-high profile. The exterior of the prosthesis contains silicone.
In terms of shape, the prostheses can be round or teardrop-shaped, the latter giving a more natural shape to the breast augmentation for some women, but less suitable for women who want fullness in the upper pole of the breast.
Mentor has a lifetime guarantee against breakage, read more about the MENTOR promise - Guarantee in a class of its own here
Pick-up and possible accommodation
If you live far from the clinic, we recommend that you stay overnight in or near Oslo.
Hotels near Oslo Plastic Surgery;
Hotel Gabels Hus in Gabelsgate 16.
Frogner House Apartments, Bygdøy Allé 53.
Remember that you need to bring a person to pick you up from the clinic and accompany you to the hotel after the operation by car as you will not be walking or taking public transport. You should also have someone with you
the same day and the first night.
Before the operation
You must be healthy on the day of surgery. If you are in doubt whether you have a cold or similar, please contact us. The operation is not performed when you have flu with fever or cough or other infection in the body. Before the operation, you will receive a prescription for antibiotics, painkillers and Hibiscrub solution 40 mg/ml, which you can buy at the pharmacy.
The day before surgery and on the day of surgery, you should shower at home with Hibiscrub solution. This is a disinfectant soap that should be rinsed off with water and the skin dried with a clean towel. Put on clean clothes when you leave home. Do not use perfume and lotion. All jewelry, piercings and nail polish must be removed no later than the day before surgery and replaced
7 to 10 days after surgery.
You must attend the surgery fasting. This means that you should not eat food 6 hours before the operation, but you can drink some water and juice (not milk or juice), chew gum / throat lozenges up to 4 hours before the operation.
You must arrange in advance for someone to pick you up at the clinic approx. 1 hour after the operation (3 hours after your appointment), as you cannot drive, take public transport or a taxi on your own.
It is important that you stop taking blood-thinning medication about 14 days before surgery. For other medications, consult the clinic before the operation. A lot of garlic and health food preparations should also not be consumed.
To get the best possible result from silicone breast augmentation and to avoid complications, it is recommended that you have as normal weight as possible. If you smoke, or practice other forms of nicotine such as snus or electronic cigarettes, you must quit at least 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after surgery.
On the day of surgery
You will be greeted by our staff who will welcome you and together prepare you for the operation before the surgeon checks on you before the procedure and draws up the planned procedure, as well as answering your questions. Anesthesia will also come and greet you and answer your questions. After the operation, you will be served food and plenty to drink in the form of bread, yogurt and juice.
During the operation itself, a pocket is prepared under the mammary gland or under the pectoral muscle.
A third, better option for most people is to place the implant under the skin of the pectoral muscle (pectoralis muscle), which will also protect the prosthesis with the fascia (the skin around the muscle) and avoid using the muscle itself.
A silicone prosthesis is inserted of a size and type chosen in collaboration with the patient before surgery. The scar is placed either under the breast (most common), around the nipple or through the armpit. Rippling (wrinkling) of the skin is avoided if the implant is placed under muscle or fascia.
After the operation
We recommend that you do not travel by plane for the first 48 hours after the surgery, during this time a check-up appointment will be arranged at the clinic and you should come for a check-up at the clinic
the day after the surgery.
In the first few hours after surgery, you may feel a little tired and sometimes a little nauseous. It is important that you take painkillers as prescribed and as needed, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids for the first 24 hours. Some people may feel a little dizzy, so it's a good idea to take a few minutes to get up or stand up. For the first two days, you should rest and lie as still as possible, with your upper body raised. For the next five days, you can move around gently.
After the operation, you will be given a special bandage that is removed after 3 days, and the tape is left on for 2 weeks. You should wear a sports bra for 6 weeks after the bandage is removed. After the tape is removed (after 2 weeks), you can shower and apply new tape. It is recommended that you tape the scars with skin-friendly tape for 2 months. Skin-friendly tape such as Steri-Strip can be purchased at the pharmacy, alternatively silicone tape.
We close the wound with stitches that dissolve on their own. We do not usually insert drains (tubes), only in very few cases are drains inserted to remove blood and fluid from the wound area under
the breast. These are usually removed 1-2 days after surgery.
The final result can only be assessed after 3-6 months. Follow-up check-ups are arranged with the clinic; the day after, after 1-2 weeks, 3-6 months and a final check-up after one year. You must call to arrange the check-ups yourself, or make an appointment with the clinic on the day of surgery.
Bleeding and infection are uncommon and in very few cases require reoperation and/or antibiotic treatment. Anesthetic complications, such as an allergic reaction to
anesthetics, are extremely rare.
In principle, breast augmentation does not provide grounds for sick leave. Physical exercise and hard physical work should be postponed for about 2 weeks.
The scars are often red, itchy and hard at first, but over time they will both fade and soften. However, the scars are hidden by bras and will not be visible in low-cut dresses. In rare cases, the scars can become wide and clearly visible, depending on the woman's own inherited characteristics. We therefore recommend that you tape the scars for a couple of months after a breast augmentation. Tape can be purchased at pharmacies.
If correction is necessary due to complications or unsatisfactory results, this is done free of charge within the one-year warranty period, provided that there is a medical
indication and a clear potential for improvement.

In Norway, it is not allowed to show before and after pictures from cosmetic procedures in marketing or on the clinic's website. However, we can show beautiful photos from previous patients when you come in for a consultation with the surgeon. This can be a great help when we choose the shape and size of the implant, and it can make it easier for you to imagine the result.
We can also offer a preliminary examination with a 3D imaging system. We take pictures of your body and can use image simulation to show you what it might look like with different sizes and types of implants.
We have a 1-year warranty. If correction is necessary due to complications or unsatisfactory results, this is done free of charge within one year, provided that there is a medical indication and a clear potential for improvement. This is our one-year warranty agreement.
Oslo Plastic Surgery uses the renowned Mentor Memory Gel prostheses. They are available with a smooth or textured surface and with a moderate to ultra-high profile. In consultation with your surgeon, you will decide which implant is right for you.
