Oslo Plastic Surgery's chief physician Dr. Kalaaji participated as both guest lecturer and faculty member at the 31th SOFCEP Congress in Lyon (French association for aesthetic surgery), France 01-02-06-18

He lectured on the following subjects:

1. How to start up your own plastic surgery practice.

Dr. Kalaaji shared his own experiences after running his plastic surgery clinic for 16 years; about the start-up and up to now. He lectured on how important it is to have ethical rules to look after the patient and not create a need.

Dr. Kalaaji also talked about the importance of having good follow-up of the patients afterwards. Oslo Plastikkirurgi always has a check-up the day after the operation and then regular checks for a year after that.

Oslo Plastikkirurgi also has a one-year warranty on everything surgeries so that if correction is necessary due to complications or an unsatisfactory result, this is done free of charge within the one-year warranty period, provided that there is a medical indication and a clear potential for improvement.

Dr. Kalaaji reviewed Oslo Plastic Surgery's own studies/research in which the quality of life of patients who have undergone surgeries such as the insertion of breast implants, breast lift with and without implants, intimate surgery, rhinoplasty, correction of inverted nipples and breast augmentation with own fat.

Dr. Kalaaji encouraged other plastic surgeons to conduct their own research as this provides a better understanding of what patients feel after a surgery .

The lecture was very well received and led to constructive discussions afterwards.

2. Buttock augmentation with own fat (BBL)

Dr. Kalaaji reviewed the history of buttock augmentation (BBL) and addressed the internationally reported complications that have occurred following such procedures. Especially the serious complications that can arise if the procedure is not done correctly. He talked about Oslo Plastikkirurgi's long experience with BBL.

Some develop asymmetric shape and/or volume on the bottom. It can be flat or disproportionate to the figure and it can be difficult to find clothes that fit or sit nicely. Others develop asymmetry on the sides and seat which can be aesthetically or practically unsightly. If you have excess fat in nearby areas such as the waist, stomach, or the outside/inside of the thighs, this can make it look more disproportionate in relation to the bum. It is therefore optimal to remove fat from nearby areas with unwanted fat and then put it in the bum (BBL).

The demand for buttock augmentation with own fat or BBL as it is most often called (Brazilian Butt Lift) has exploded in recent years. It has been widely discussed in the media, has become more widely accepted and the technique has developed.

It is important to explain to patients who have unrealistic expectations of a BBL and have a desire for a "balloon butt" that this is almost impossible to achieve and that it is not risk-free. Therefore, all patients must be carefully assessed to see if they are good candidates for this type of surgery.

The aim is to achieve good fullness with nice symmetry to the rest of the body.

Dr. Kalaaji explained the importance of a thorough patient safety assessment before such an intervention and his own experiences with all the interventions he has carried out regarding BBL, buttock augmentation with own fat.

Before you can undergo a BBL, you must think carefully about which areas you want the fat to be taken from. The fat can be taken from different places on the body and in consultation with the surgeon, the areas that are best suited to take fat for the BBL procedure are determined.

Fat transplantation to the buttocks (BBL) can be perceived by many as a win-win situation as you also get fat removed from unwanted places for insertion in the buttocks.

The amount of fat needed for the procedure depends on the desired and achievable volume of the buttocks. With a standard fat injection, you get small scars of around 2 mm where the needles are inserted

The result of this type of surgical technique depends on resorption of the injected fat, i.e. the extent to which the body itself sucks away the fat. Usually, the fat integrates (grows) well in the receiving area. You have to expect that the body absorbs up to 30-40{54b116087a6f74e83971d02c04db3cc13141fd9ff760a1e389c9721123fe5531} of the amount of fat in the first months, therefore you fill a little more than you need (overcorrect) to compensate for this loss. There is also no guarantee that someone will absorb more than 40 {54b116087a6f74e83971d02c04db3cc13141fd9ff760a1e389c9721123fe5531}.

Handling the fat is crucial for it to grow firmly. There are several conflicting techniques for processing the fat that is removed so that only pure fat is injected. The fat must be treated carefully without major damage to the fat cells. A centrifugation process in which a simple machine separates the fat is considered to meet these requirements. But here the last word has not been said. Oslo Plastic Surgery uses a low degree of centrifugation to separate the fat, but retains the intimate fat fluid that supplies the fat cells with, among other things, the natural growth factors and stem cells that we think give an optimal result for BBL.
