Butt augmentation with your own fat (Brazilian Butt Lift - BBL)

bbl

Some people naturally have an asymmetrical buttock shape or volume that can appear flat or disproportionate compared to the rest of the figure. This can create challenges in finding clothes that fit well and look flattering. Asymmetry can also occur on the sides and seat, which can be both aesthetically and practically disfiguring.

Use of fat from other body parts

For those who have excess fat in areas such as the waist, abdomen or thighs (both outside and inside), this fat can cause the buttocks to look even more disproportionate. An effective solution is to remove fat from these unwanted areas and transplant it to the buttock area. This can result in a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing shape.

Procedure for buttock augmentation using own fat grafting

It is important to carefully consider which areas the fat should be taken from. The fat can be taken from several places on the body, and in consultation with the surgeon, it is determined which areas are most suitable for fat extraction. This is important in order to achieve the best possible result for buttock augmentation.

The benefits of buttock augmentation through your own fat grafting

Fat grafting to the buttocks is considered by many to be a win-win situation, as it both removes unwanted fat and increases the volume of the buttocks. The amount of fat required depends on the desired volume and what is realistic to achieve. Usually the fat grows well into the new area, but the body is expected to absorb 30-40% of the fat in the first few months. Therefore, an overcorrection is used to compensate for this loss.

The importance of correct fat management in fat grafting procedures

Proper handling of the grease is critical for it to adhere and heal well. There are various techniques for treating the removed fat, including the use of a centrifuge to ensure that only pure fat is injected. We use a gentle centrifugation to separate the fat, while retaining the nutrient-rich fatty liquid that is essential for the best results.

Follow-up treatment according to the BBL procedure

It is not uncommon for a new injection to be needed if there has been a resorption of more than 40% of the injected fat. In such cases, we offer a new fat injection free of charge within the warranty period, provided that there is sufficient fat available for further volume increase or correction of asymmetry. If the fat is not abnormally absorbed, the result will be natural and long-lasting. With standard fat injections, small scars of approximately 2 mm are created and cannulated.

Before the operation

You must be healthy on the day of the operation. If you are in any doubt about whether you have a cold or similar, please contact us. The operation is not performed if you have flu with fever, cough or other infection in the body. Before the operation, you will receive a prescription for antibiotics, painkillers if necessary and Hibiscrub solution 40 mg/ml, which you can buy at the pharmacy.

The day before surgery and on the day of the operation, wash your entire body with Hibiscrub solution in the shower. This is a disinfectant soap that should be rinsed off with water and the skin dried with a clean towel. Put on clean clothes when you leave home. Do not use perfume and lotion. All jewelry, piercings and nail polish must be removed no later than the day before the operation and replaced 7 to 10 days after the operation.

To get the best possible result and to avoid complications, it is recommended that you have a normal weight and not an excessively high BMI. If you smoke, or use nicotine such as snuff or electronic cigarettes, you must quit at least 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after surgery.

You should come to the surgery fasting. This means that you should not eat any food including fruit or drink juice with pulp or dairy products 6 hours before the operation. You can drink water, juice, juice without pulp or coffee/tea without dairy products or chew gum/drops/throat lozenges up to 4 hours before the operation. Medications that you may need to take on the day of surgery can be swallowed with 1 glass of water max. 100 ml up to 1 hour before the start of anesthesia.

It is important that you stop taking blood-thinning medication about 14 days before the operation, preferably in consultation with your GP or us. For other medications, consult the clinic before the operation. You should also avoid eating a lot of garlic and health food preparations.

You must arrange in advance with a person to pick you up at the clinic about 1 hour after the end of the operation, as you cannot drive yourself, take public transport or taxi alone.

We recommend that you buy a so-called BBL pillow before the operation, or a bathing ring.

On the day of surgery

You will be received by our staff who will prepare you for the operation before the surgeon sees you. Before the actual procedure, the surgeon will go through the procedure, draw up the plan and answer any questions you may have. Anesthesia staff will also come and greet you and answer your questions.

When the operation is about to begin, the surgical nurse will pick you up and wash the operating area while anesthesia personnel give you a sedative in your arm so you sleep under surgery. In addition, the surgeon will administer a local anesthetic in the operating area for a long-lasting analgesic effect in the operating area after the operation, which also reduces bleeding in the area.

After the operation, you will be moved to the recovery room where you will have your own bed. You will then rest for 1-2 hours and be served food and plenty of drink in the form of sandwiches, yogurt and juice (remember to inform about allergies). Painkillers may be given if necessary.

The surgeon will check on you before your return home/hotel stay and you will be cleared by anesthesia staff before you go home with an adult companion.

After the operation

All patients come for a post-operative check-up the day after surgery. We recommend that you do not travel by air for the first 48 hours after surgery. During this time, a follow-up appointment will be arranged at the clinic and you should come to the clinic the day after the surgery.

In the first few hours after the operation, you may feel a little tired and sometimes a little nauseous. It's important that you take painkillers as prescribed and as needed, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids during the first 24 hours. Some people may feel a little dizzy, so it's a good idea to take a few minutes to stand up. For the first two days, you should rest and lie as still as possible, with your upper body elevated. For the next five days, you can move gently. If you have an active job, it's a good idea to stay at home. After the operation, you will be given compression garments to wear day and night for 4-6 weeks.

After a BBL procedure, for the first two days you should rest and lie as still as possible. For the next five days, you can walk carefully on your feet. You should not put pressure on the transplant area by sitting on it; you can buy a seat cushion (BBL cushion) or seat ring (bath ring) to use for short periods after the operation if you want to lie flat on your back. Feel free to use a stomach or side lying position for the first ten days. You should wear a bodysuit that does not press on the fat. It is recommended that you tape the scars with skin-friendly tape for 2-3 months.

We will give you compression garments on the day of the operation, to be worn both night and day for 4 weeks, you can go without when it is for washing.

You can expect about 30% of the inserted fat to disappear within 4 months after a BBL. We take this into account and transplant some more fat to give a satisfactory result. In some cases, more than 40% of the fat disappears. We therefore have a guarantee where we transplant new fat free of charge within 1 year if there is a medical indication.

The final result can only be assessed after 3-6 months. Follow-up checks are arranged with the clinic; the day after surgery, after 1-2 weeks and 3-6 months, as well as a final check after a year. You must call to arrange the check-ups yourself, or alternatively make an appointment with the clinic on the day of the operation.

Bleeding and infection are uncommon and in very few cases require reoperation and/or antibiotic treatment. Anesthetic complications, such as allergic reaction to anesthetics, are extremely rare.

In principle, BBL does not provide a basis for sick leave, but if you have a physical job, we recommend that you take this into account in the first few days after surgery.
Physical exercise and hard physical work should be postponed for about 4 weeks.

If correction is necessary due to complications or unsatisfactory results, this will be done free of charge within one year, provided there is a medical indication and a clear potential for improvement. This is our guarantee period.

Pick-up and accommodation

You must arrange in advance for someone to pick you up at the clinic about 1 hour after the operation, as you cannot drive, take public transport or a taxi on your own. You must also have someone with you the same day and the first night.

If you live far from the clinic, we recommend that you stay overnight in Oslo, either with family/friends or at a hotel.

Experience and patient safety at Oslo Plastikkirurgi

Oslo Plastikkirurgi has performed several hundred BBL-surgeries. The clinic gives high priority to patient safety and carefully assesses all patients to determine whether they are suitable for this type of procedure. The aim of the operation is to achieve a round and symmetrical shape and ensure that the result looks natural in relation to the rest of the body.

Growing popularity and development

Since 2014, the demand for buttock augmentation using fat grafting (BBL) has increased significantly. This is due to greater awareness of the procedure through the media, wider acceptance in society, as well as improvements in surgical techniques.

Leading expertise and international recognition

The clinic's chief physician, often invited as a lecturer, presents the techniques and methods that contribute to increased patient safety. Among other things, Dr. Kalaaji was a guest speaker and expert on BBL-surgeries at UKAAPS in London in 2018, where he discussed how such surgeries procedures can be performed in a safe and responsible manner.

Research and publications

Oslo Plastic Surgery has developed 20 medical guidelines to improve competence, results, quality and safety.

The clinic has also published a study in the internationally recognized Aesthetic Surgery Journal on the safety of gluteal augmentation with fat. The study offers a comprehensive review of existing literature and the clinic's own safety data.

By maintaining a high standard of patient safety and continuously improving surgical techniques, Oslo Plastic Surgery stands out as a leader in aesthetic surgery.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Oslo Plastic Surgery answers frequently asked questions here, and we hope this provides you with good information. We want to be helpful in the process before a surgery. If you have any further questions, just write or call us.

The criteria for taking a BBL are lack of shape and/or volume of the buttocks, which may be flat or disproportionate to the figure or asymmetrical in shape. In order to be able to take a BBL, you must have fat in other places on the body to take the fat from.

Prostheses are not used for buttock augmentation in Norway as the procedure is controversial, there are many possible complications, and the long-term satisfaction is poorer than with the insertion of fat.

The outcome of this type of surgical technique depends on the resorption of the injected fat, i.e. the extent to which the body itself rejects the fat. Usually the fat is well incorporated (healed) in the receiving area. You must expect the body to absorb up to 30-40% of the amount of fat in the first few months, so you fill up a little more than you need (overcorrect) to compensate for this loss. There is also no guarantee that anyone will absorb more than 40%. The aim of the procedure is to achieve good fullness with good symmetry in relation to the rest of the body.

In the first few hours after the operation, you may feel a little tired and occasionally a little nauseous. It's important that you take painkillers as prescribed and drink plenty of fluids for the first 24 hours. Some people may feel a little dizzy, so it's a good idea to take a few minutes to stand up. You should take it easy for the first few days after the procedure, with the exception of coming for a check-up the following day. You will feel some discomfort and pressure as new fat is injected into the buttocks. How long the discomfort lasts is individual, but 1-2 days is common. BBL is not perceived as painful, but rather as tight and sore. You'll be swollen for 2-3 weeks, some people get bruises that also disappear relatively quickly. You will need to wear compression garments from immediately after the operation, which you will receive at the clinic for 4-6 weeks. We recommend that you purchase compression garments to be able to change into.

For the first 4 weeks, both night and day, then only during the day. For the areas from which fat has been harvested, you can remove the body suit after 5-6 days and, if necessary, shower the areas that have been liposuctioned, apply new tape and then put the body suit back on. The bodysuit must be worn day and night for the first four weeks, and then during the day for 6 weeks.
You should not put pressure on the transplant area by sitting on your butt or sleeping on your back for the first 4 weeks unless you use a BBL pillow or a bathing ring. You can sit without putting pressure on your buttocks, but only on your upper thighs. You should wear a bodysuit that is loose over the buttocks and does not press on the injected fat.
BBL does not qualify for sick leave, you do not need to be bedridden and can resume work after a few days.
We have a one-year guarantee on the operation and if, up to one year after the procedure, there is a medical indication for an unsatisfactory result, a new surgery/correction can be expected free of charge.

The price of a Brazilian Butt Lift, or buttock augmentation with your own fat, starts at NOK 52,000, but varies from person to person. It depends on how many places the fat needs to be taken from and how much needs to be inserted.
